Plan a Strategic Retreat to get shit done

Episode 39: Plan a Strategic Retreat to get shit done

I’ve got this thing I do, religiously, every quarter. I vanish with a friend for three days for a strategic retreat. We’re talking about escaping to a familiar spot, an hour away, and just… working. No distractions, just pure focus. We’re up with the dark, plunging into the ocean (yes, even when it’s freezing), and then it’s straight down to business.

Here’s the kicker: my brain’s now trained for this. It saves up the big projects for these retreats. And as a one-woman show, these three days are pure gold. They let me:

  • Map out podcast content, way ahead of the game.
  • Get my annual client retreat dialed in.
  • Structure those crucial client in-person days, three times a year.
  • Prep for speaking gigs, so I’m not scrambling last minute.
  • Craft those lead magnets that actually convert.
  • Finally, tackle those “little” tasks my VAs have been (patiently) waiting for.

The Reality of Balancing Home and Biz

My kids are older now, thank goodness (13 and almost 17), which means I can actually get away without total chaos. But, these retreats also act as a reality check. If I’m spending ages prepping, making endless lists, it’s a sign I’m carrying too much of the household load.

My husband and I are both working parents, so sharing the load is non-negotiable. It’s taken a while, but he’s now fully involved in the school stuff, and that makes a world of difference. It means I can actually relax during my retreat, and come home to a sane environment.

Getting Away When The Kids Are Little

I remember the sheer guilt of leaving for a networking event when my girls were little. Even just an evening out felt like a huge deal. So, I get it. Getting away with small children is tough.

But as they grow, even a short escape can be transformative. A couple of nights away, with one day of pure, uninterrupted focus? It’s a game-changer. You’ll be amazed at how differently your brain works when it’s not constantly interrupted by the daily grind.

Unlocking Deeper Thinking

Here’s the thing I tell my clients: when you give your brain space, it goes deeper. You get past the surface-level stuff and tap into the real insights. All those layers of thinking, the rational, irrational, and creative, they all come into play. And that’s where the magic happens.

How to Make This Work for You

My advice? Start small:

  • Block out one day to work somewhere different.
  • Then, try an overnight stay.
  • Gradually work up to two or three nights.

My friend and I even fantasize about a full week away. We work hard, but we also make time to recharge. It’s about balance.

These retreats have been a serious level-up for my business and my sanity. And I hope they do the same for you.

Hey, welcome to these short slaps with Nats. Slaps of Nats. There’s only one of me.

Anyway, once a quarter, I mark time in my calendar to go away with a really great friend of mine. We’ve been doing this for a couple of years where we go to the same place up about an hour from where we live, and we spend three full days getting shit done.

So that means we leave our family, we book a batch, we can work sun up, sundown, which we usually do. We get up early in the dark, we go jump in the ocean, even in the middle of winter, we squeal, we jump around, we come back, we have breakfast, and we literally get stuck in.

And the reason I love doing this is my brain knows that I do it regularly enough now that it’ll go, okay, cool, that’s a good project for when I go away. And this is where I can. This is where I have so much capacity in the work that I do. With me just being the one person who delivers it is I can go and spend these three days fully planning out all these podcasts.

For example, my client retreat that I run every year, my client in person days that I run three times a year, my events coming up that I’m speaking at, I can confirm them, I can plan them, I can. It’s full creation mode, right? This is where I can get all those new ideas for lead magnets or tidy up all the really little things that my business needs and that maybe my virtual assistants had been asking me for, and I just hadn’t bloody done it yet. And so finally getting around to that stuff for them is really, really important and it’s really powerful.

So my kids are a little bit older now. They’re 13 and nearly 17. So it is a little bit easier for me to go away now. And it also helps me gauge how much I’m doing in the household by how easy is it for me to go away. So if I have to do too much work before I have to go away for these three days, as in, like, there’s so much coordinate, if I have to write less upon lists or anything like that, it actually reminds me of how much I need to redelegate back to the household.

So I have a husband who also works, and we both need our incomes to run our household, so we both have to work and we both share the load. And it’s taken me a long time to actually give him the load to share because I don’t know, by nature, I definitely tend to take all the kids stuff on, you know, only the last couple of years have I put his email down to the school as well. So he receives all the things. So getting him to help me make decisions, having him help with all the school, extra school things, he does a lot around the house, having that means that when I do go away, I’m so much more prepared and I feel like I’m really, I’m really less stressed, which for me is really important. So that when I come back after these three days away, you’re not coming back into that, into that chaos right where you’re feeling overwhelmed now.

It hasn’t always been like that for me. I remember the first time I ever left for a networking event and the girls were, I think the girls must have been like 2 and 5 or something. And I felt so guilty. And it was an evening event, like, what the hell?

So I get the work and the mental work that goes into just even getting yourself to a networking event. So if your kids are still little, it’s harder to actually go away and do things like this. I get it.

But if your kids are, you know, if your kids can get themselves ready for school and pack their school bags and don’t have too much on and maybe you’ve got some help, then I do recommend if you can get away for a few days, even if it’s just two nights away, but having one full day to focus on your business where you don’t have to worry about picking someone up, what are you going to do for dinner, all that stuff.

You get your brain to sit and think and process in a really different way. And it’s something that I try to teach my clients a lot, is if you can get your brain to not be so fast paced and cogitate such a fancy word, cogitate on all your ideas that when it knows it’s going to a place to put them down, you’re actually going to get more of, I suppose an iceberg effect. Not just the tip of the iceberg thoughts, but everything that sits underneath. You’re going to get your irrational brain, your rational brain, your calm brain, your crazy brain. You’re gonna have gotten all of your thoughts out in different ways of thinking and your solution to the problem you might be trying to solve or your creativity will actually really blow you away.

So top tip from me today, if you can, even if it’s starting with just one day in your calendar where you go work somewhere different, then work up to going away for a, then work up to going away for two nights and then three nights.

And then me and my friend, we always laugh about, man, we’re just gonna go away for a week now. As much as we work hard, we also break hard. So, you know, if we’re gonna have our dinner or if we’re gonna go for a walk, we definitely get all that piece in as well.

So. Yeah, I know for me, it’s really helped me with my personal capacity and just my creativity in business. So I’m hoping that you will get that, too. See you later.
